Data due to be released on Thursday will show that 51 impact investment funds with combined assets of $6.4bn that launched between 1998 and 2010 generated an average net internal rate of return of 6.9 per cent. A universe of comparable private equity and venture capital funds returned 8.1 per cent a year over the same period, according to the analysis by the Global Impact Investing Network and Cambridge Associates, a consultancy. “There’s a view among some investors that impact investing necessarily entails a sacrifice in financial return. This data helps to show that is more perception than reality,” said Jessica Matthews, head of Cambridge Associates’ mission-related investing group.
